Meet The Finalists: Mambo!
Finalist, Mambo, is a multi-tenant software platform that optimizes experiences within closed network communities. Through the Admin dashboard, the platform allows Administrator(s) to create, schedule and organize event postings with ease. Users may then access these events/categories to create personalized dashboards, and aggregate their activities. This user-centric process results in increased participation and sense of belonging.
Deanna Charles, Founder and President of Do the Mambo, shares her thoughts on what you should know about doing a startup. She tells us the benefits of being an empty nester while doing a startup and gives a tip on supporting your first customer.
What surprised you most about getting started as a start-up?
The many legal and accounting requirements to create a solid business foundation. The time and financial investments in establishing the business were almost equal to creating the product itself.
What’s one thing every entrepreneur should know but no one tells them?
Pre-seed funding is extremely hard to get, so you must be willing to bootstrap for a long time and be self-sufficient. Ironically, at this point you may not need funding.
Is work-life balance a problem for you? What is one no-fail tactic you use to create balance?
Not at all, as an “empty nester”, I have a completely flexible schedule. Having adult kids, dogs, and a workout routine is a great way to balance the pressure, process tough issues, and destress. A no-fail tactic is to have friends who believe in work/life balance and include you in their activities.

Any other pieces of advice?
Try to have at least one customer identified that you are certain will want to buy your product before you begin. Then, build future marketing support into their contract.
